|2016 SCHOLARS PROGRAM AWARDEES ANNOUNCED
A record number of applications and essay papers were received -- 18!
The Scholars Committee comprised of representatives of eight member companies have selected the following as recipients of an award which, in total reached $16,000 - a new record for IRUA member company generosity:
First Place - Matthew Forshay of Rutgers University and who interned with Arch Re. His paper was titled: "Fracking & The Insurance Industry"
Second Place - Logan Ryan of Dickinson College and who interned with Aspen Re. His paper was titled: "Autonomous Vehicles: The Evolution of Auto Insurance"
Third Place - Daniel Stinson of Villanova University and who interned with JLT Re North America. His paper was titled: "Emerging Risk - Climate Change Related Impacts on the Insurance and Reinsurance Industry"
Fourth Place - Joseph Felix of the University of Connecticut and who interned with Aspen Re. His paper was titled: "Cloud Coverage: Analyzing Cyber Security Risks"
Over the course of the next 12 months each paper will be published in an edition of the Journal of Reinsurance so be sure to read it when it hits your Inbox!

IRUA Launches Its Strategic Initiative Campaign
IRUA celebrates its 50th birthday in 2017! In order to stay relevant the Board announces its new Strategic Initiatives which followed a high-level review aimed to enhance educational and networking benefits as an add value to your membership.
♦ A formal change in the acronym from "IRU" to "IRUA" which brings consistency
with email and website addresses;
♦ A new modern and dynamic logo and re-branding of all content and materials;
♦ A totally redesigned and user-friendly website with much improved user access and
functionality *To be launched shortly!
♦ Consolidation of committee structures to reflect our 4 core focus areas:
Education, Scholars, Conference & Journal of Reinsurance
As this is a still a work in progress, your patience is appreciated but it will all be worth it!!
UPCOMING EDUCATION SCHEDULE
REINSURANCE NETWORKING GROUP
The RNG group meets over lunch from 12 -2 and offers an educational event and good networking and social opportunities.
The next meeting was to have been on THURSDAY JANUARY 12 but is now POSTPONED until a date in February or March that we are currently discussing.
MAYER BROWN LLP is kindly hosting and firm partner Richard Dodge will be leading a discussion of Data Security in the Arbitration Process. This important topic relates to all business dealings now, not just those engaged in the arbitration process. Open to all at $55 per person for buffet lunch and CLE credit, too.
Registration for this important and interesting event will commence when once the new date is finalized in the near future.
REINSURANCE CLAIMS & UNDERWRITING AUDITS
MARCH 7 & 8 - a two-day event with one-day focusing on Claims and another on Underwriting. A networking reception will be held at the conclusion of day one. The seminar will be held at Mayer Brown's midtown Manhattan office.
Day One - March 7 - is devoted to CLAIMS with the topics including:
- an essential guide to claims auditing; audit protocol in complex claims & cross cultural relationships; legal & administrative perspectives; contract compliance/premium accounting/importance of knowing treaty language/proper ceding & allocation
There will be a Networking Reception following Day One including Day Two only registrants.
Day Two - March 8 - is devoted to UNDERWRITING. Topics include:
- an essential guide to underwriting auditing; forensic accounting & transactional audits; how to look forward to a property reinsurance audit; anticipating & identifying problems/team translation/valuation studies

Lewner and Associate, David Simunovich presented the topic: Exploring the New World of Privilege in the Reinsured/Reinsurer Relationship.

Steve Schwartz of Chaffetz Lindsey presented on the subject of the Bellefonte decision and recent developments in the Second Circuit and the meeting was held in Chaffetz Lindsey's impressive new offices at 1700 Broadway (53/54th streets).
