FIRST NEW LOOK SCHOLARS PROGRAM AWARDEES ANNOUNCED

The IRUA Scholars Committee had a difficult task in choosing the winning essays submitted by college students interning with IRUA member companies this past Summer and by a narrow margin the following awards were agreed:

FIRST PLACE ($7,000) - KATHRYN MARTINCIC for her paper entitled "Drones and Their Impact on the Insurance and Reinsurance Industry". Katie attends Temple University and interned at Maiden Re.  PLEASE NOTE: Ms. Martincic's essay will be appearing in the next edition of the Journal of Reinsurance which will be distributed in the very near future to IRUA members and JOR subscribers. 

SECOND PLACE ($5,000)  - KELLY PETRARCA for her paper entitled "Autonomous Cars: An Emerging Risk". Kelly Anne also attends Temple and interned at JLT Re.

THIRD PLACE ($3,000) - ALEXANDRA BERG for her paper "Insurance Implications of the Legalization of Marijuana". There was something about Temple students this year as Alexandra also attends Temple and interned at Munich Re America.

Congratulations to the winners from Temple University and our thanks to all the intern hosting companies.

We wish to thank all the participants for their excellent papers and we hope that you enjoyed your internship experience at an IRUA member company.

IRUA LAUNCHES ITS STRATEGIC INITIATIVE CAMPAIGN

As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the organization in 2017 the Board is pleased to announce the start of its new Strategic Initiatives, which followed a high-level review aimed to enhance educational and networking services provided and add value to your membership. These include:

 - formal change in the acronym from "IRU" to "IRUA" which brings consistency with email and website addresses

- a new modern and dynamic logo and re-branding of all content and materials

- a totally redesigned and user-friendly website

- consolidation of internal committee structures to reflect our four core focus areas - Education; Scholars; Conference and Journal of Reinsurance

As this is a work in progress your patience is appreciated but it will all be worth it!!

IRUA ANNOUNCES NEW AND UPDATED MISSION AND VISION STATEMENTS 

As part of the structural updating of the IRUA, the following new Mission Statement and a Vision Statement were adopted by the Board of Directors at their meeting held on September 22, 2015 in New York City.

MISSION STATEMENT

We are a not-for-profit corporation, organized for the purpose of providing high quality insurance and reinsurance education, meaningful networking opportunities, and the dissemination of topical publications and information relevant to the reinsurance industry.

VISION STATEMENT

To facilitate a vibrant forum that encourages professional and personal development of member company personnel through educational excellence, the exchange of knowledge among industry constituents within the insurance and reinsurance marketplace and recognition for academic excellence for the next generation of reinsurance professionals. We accomplish this vision through focused educational offerings, a robust Scholars program, the publication of the Journal of Reinsurance, and an annual Conference.

PRELIMINARY 2016 EDUCATION EVENTS SCHEDULE

FEBRUARY 3  - - TOO LATE
CAT BOND MECHANICS    ALL NEW - "Lunch and Learn" 2-hour program - being held at Hogan Lovells LLP, 875 Third Avenue in midtown NYC. The program will run from 12 Noon until 2 pm.  Registration cost was $55 for IRUA members and $65 for non-members. Chi Hum, Managing Director of Guy Carpenter gave an excellent and informative presentation that sparked much interest and questions and comments from the audience. A copy of the presentation will be sent to those registered.

MARCH 9
CLAIMS AND UNDERWRITING ASPECTS OF EMERGING RISKS    (one-day seminar) -
being held at Mound, Cotton, Wollan & Greengrass, One New York Plaza, New York, NY. Registration  is now open so CLICK HERE to register.  Topics to be covered include: Big Data; Mobility and Autonomous Vehicles: Legalized/Medical Marijuana and speakers will consider the impact of these emerging risks to the reinsurance industry. Watch for updates in your email regarding the agenda and speakers. The cost of this seminar is $495 for IRUA members and $645 for non-members and will commence at 8.15 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast and run until around 5 pm..

Next Generation Reinsurance Leadership Seminar   (1 1/2 day program)- being held at Transatlantic Re's office in downtown NYC. The program is still being designed but will be in a similar format to the previous programs intended for the up and coming reinsurance leaders of the future.

JULY 19
Risk Management - How Risk Managers Manage Risk, Tools Used, Physical Risk 
( half-day program or lunch and learn) - being held at Crowell & Moring's midtown NYC office.
