This award was established in 1988 by the IRU Board of Directors to honor individuals for exemplary service to the association. The award is named in memory of Mr. Roy G. Nelson, one of the original organizers and first Chairman of the Association's Education Committee.

Mr. Nelson had a long and distinguished career in reinsurance. He held various underwriting and executive positions with General Re-Skandia America prior to joining Johnson-Higgins/Willis Faber (USA) as its President. He died in March of 1988 after a long and heroic battle with cancer.
